accountant or not........?

accountant or not........?
What would the average fee be to consult over tax returns? Do you pay a monthly fee or just a one off fee? I am letting my house through an agent tomorrow and i need to know what to keep etc... Where is the best place to start for info? Thanks

Answer 1 :
"How long is a piece of string" - cost will depend on complexity and so on. Payment arrangements also vary, depending on how big your bill is. Basically on your tax return you declare your rental income and then deduct the expenses of running your property letting, including your mortgage interest, letting agent fees, maintenance costs, landlords insurance, and so on. Of course, you don't have to have an accountant to do your tax returns for you.

How to Become a Financial Advisor?

How to Become a Financial Advisor?
I am currently studying accounting and I am employed as a Junior accountant, I have been hearing about financial advisors and the increasing popular demand for them, However I'm not sure how I would go about becoming one and what this particular Job involves. A few points to consider; - I am not interested in attending university if possible - I would like to own my own business
Financial Services - 1 Answers

Answer 1 :
Hi, I could go on forever here, however to try and keep this short....ish Step 1 - You need to do your exams, if you don;t currently hold any industry qualifications (CF, FPC or CeFA exams) then I suggest you start by doing the new RO exams, which once you have done all 6 would give you the Diploma in Regulated Financial planning, which you will need post 2012 to give financial advice anyway. These exams are quite expensive. It's all self-study, the coursebook would set you back £130 for each module and around the same for the exam, so assuming you pass first time everytime your looking at around £270ish per unit. The units go RO1,2,3,4,5 which are all multiple choice papers, which you sit at an examination centre on a computer. Finally RO6 is the final exam which is a written paper, basically getting you to put all the knowledge you've learnt from the previous 5 papers into practice in case study scenarios. Step 2 - You need to know your market. Having the knowledge (exams) is no good if you don't actually know what your talking about in a real life situation, so I would get a job as a paraplanner (You'll be snapped up if you have the Diploma in Regulated Financial planning). This will give you a good grounding in what an IFA does, how he goes about his business and the type of things you;ll be giving advice on. Step 3 - You will need to be signed off for CAS (competant Adviser Status) this basically means you'll shadow an experienced IFA, to learn the ropes. Then you'll start selling but you'll be supervised, then a month or 2 later after yuo've proved your able to do the job un-supervised you;ll be signed off as a competant adviser. The FSA will give you their approval, the seas will part etc etc etc. It's not an easy job, especially if you wanted to be self-employed. Theirs more red tape around financial sales than their is round a murder investigation. The rewards are there if you really want it, but do not be under the illusion that being a financial adviser is easy money, because I can tell you from experience it's anything but!

why should the mps who resign be entitled to a pension?

why should the mps who resign be entitled to a pension?
if they are found to be guilty of claiming expenses to which they are not entitled to claim while in government, whether it be down to someone else on their behalf or their own fault , they keep on blaming accountants etc .payback over claimed expenses plus interest i think , does anyone agree ?
Law & Ethics - 4 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
No, they shouldn't. They should be sent to Afghan to be used as target practise for the boys.
Answer 2 :
Can you imagine a situation where someone was caught ripping off the company which employed them and yet keeping their company pension and not being fired? At least Jacqui Smith had the honesty to resign (which was the only right thing to do) They are a bunch of pigs with their noses in the trough...actually that's pretty insulting to pigs!
Answer 3 :
If a police officer is disciplined and found to be guilty of a serious offence which leads to his dismissal, he loses his pension rights. I don't see any difference between this and the position of people who abuse their rights in public office in the way so many MPs have done. It is appalling that they are rewarded by fat pensions in such circumstances, but the situation of MEPs is even more scandalous. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6410920.ece
Answer 4 :
In many circumstances, a person pays into their pension rights. Subsequently no matter what happens they cannot be penalized by the loss of those benefits. this aspect is often overlooked when it seems dishonesty is being rewarded.

I have to give evidence in court, I dont really have any evidence to help the court, how can i get out of it?
I only spoke to this accountant once on the phone 4 to 5 years ago, as I was told he could claim back some expenses and he never even made a claim for tax return on my behalf. But he is being done for fraud. Is there any way I can get out going?
Law & Ethics - 5 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
In a word, no. If you have been subpoenaed, you are required to go unless excused by the court, which wont happen.
Answer 2 :
If you've been served with a subpoena, that's a Court order to attend. I wouldn't ignore it.
Answer 3 :
I've been called as a witness a couple of times for court cases, gone down, sat there all day and then not been called to give evidence so chances are you won't be called any way.
Answer 4 :
If you have this little to say, chances are you won't even be called to the stand unless the guy fights every inch of the way so the prosecution has to show every scrap of evidence that relates to him being untrustworthy.
Answer 5 :
You answer the questions that are put to you and if your knowledge isn't helpful to anyone, you will be done quickly. However, the court cannot determine what the questions will be (or the answers) before the hearing. So, you have to go and see what happens. BTW, you may know more than you think. The object could be, for example, to show how long he had been answering the phone in a certain fashion. Ordinarily, a case is made by many witnesses, each adding small bits of information, not by one single witness who establishes all that needs to be established.

Is it difficult to find employment in South Africa?

Is it difficult to find employment in South Africa?
If you were an accountant or doctor or somebody with some sort of good degree would it be difficult to find a job and what is the average wage?
South Africa - 6 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I dont think so for medicine.but you might have some trouble if you an accountant, especially if you dont have experience.
Answer 2 :
If you're black and poor, yes.
Answer 3 :
Yes, employment is hard to find and recruitment is very political but if you have a skill like the ones you mentioned which require a high standard of education you have a decent chance.
Answer 4 :
No, if you have a good decent degree then it would not be difficult to get a job in there. Africa needs good doctor and engineer to work in their country but I can say that getting a good package is your luck.
Answer 5 :
Depends which gender and race group you belong to.... I can only talk for the medical profession since I don't know much about Accountants. I'm white and female, which doesn't put me in a very favourable group. But I'm still one up on white males. They always talk about the crisis and how they need health professionals. I've dropped off my CV at various hospitals and Department of Health, looking for a job in the public sector since you get more benefits than in the private sector. I haven't had a single reply. I am in contact with some other black people who I studied with and who have applied for jobs at the same hospitals. They got the jobs, I didn't even get a reply stating that my application was unsuccessful. They have exactly the same qualification that I do. In my profession the state employees get on average R10 000 more than those in the private sector. They get housing subsidies, medical aids etc etc. I'm stuck in the private sector getting less than half of what my black counterparts are getting. A friend of mine (white) who has a Master's in genetic research was replaced by a black school leaver. Now if that isn't a kick in the pants I don't know what is.
Answer 6 :
If you have the right qualifications, you will get employed easily. If you just have matric or you did one of those weak programmes from Damelin, ICESA or one of those private colleges, or you have those useless degrees like BA (History), BCom (Economics) or one of those degrees that everyone has e.g HR or BCom or NDip (Engineering) then most likely you will have difficulty in getting a job.

Answer 1 :
My sister who is would say yes.But all in all she likes it
Answer 2 :
A LOT HARDER THAN BEING AT UNI
Answer 3 :
The thing with accounting is that you have to be really good at math and enjoy it. If math is not one of your better topics, I would look for another career option.
Answer 4 :
I have 1year to go with my Business Accouting BA. I've always loved telling poeple how and when and what to do with their money!!! All my life!! So when I took an accouting class in highschool, it just came so easy to me and thats when Decided I would study accouting in college. Its only as hard as you make it. Goodluck with everything.
Answer 5 :
I wonder why anyone would want to be an accountant ! I've worked in accountancy for 10+ years and recently qualified........The pay is great but that's about If I had my time again I'd choose another career......Like naked beer drinking or something Not that Im trying to put you off.......There are hundreds of accountants who love their job and quite frankly that worries me.
Answer 6 :
Difficult and hard until you know what your doing. Worth thinking about before you commit to getting yourself a degree. Can be extremely boring and not very glamorous
Answer 7 :
There are many different kinds of accountant. If you are reasonably numerate (top 75 percentile) and logical/methodical in your approach to problem solving it isn't difficult at all. The hard part is maintaining interest in your studies, as some segments of the qualifications can be very dull. There are many different types of accountancy work. Management accounting, financial accounting, bursarial work, advisory, forensic, audit.... the list goes on. It is a good career path, and if you take a good combination course, with a management element you may well be able to move into other work. Most senior officers in local government and Chief Executives started their careers in accountancy. If you are seriously considering a post graduate course in accountancy the main options are: CIMA - Chartered Institute of Management Accountants - good generic course with strong management element, liked by business and local government. http://www.cimaglobal.com/cps/rde/xchg/live/root.xsl/index.htm CIPFA - Chartered Institute of Public Finance Accountants - again good management element, but predominantly for those wanting a career in local government. http://www.cipfa.org.uk/ ACCA - Association of Chartered Certified Accountants - generally preferred option for practice accountants http://uk.accaglobal.com/ You could enter the career by working for one of the 'big four', KPMG, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Ernst&Young. Or any number of other firms, or you could apply for a trainee post within local government. You should expect to take three or four years to qualify, but the financial rewards are high. Before you leap into the career wholeheartedly, why don't you try getting a Summer job in an accounts office, or ask local firms/councils for some work experience to give you an idea of what's involved. Personally I drifted into finance by accident, I've spent 10 years advising non-financial managers on all aspects of financial rules and regulations and the customer facing aspects of the job gave me great satisfaction. I've done some audit/forensic accounting, which is brilliant if you like problem solving and puzzles. Now I'm using that experience in a general management position. Good luck, whatever you decide to do....just remember that there's more to life than work. After all I'm 34 and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!!

As a chartered accountant - can't you work that one out for yourself? Seriously; that will depend on your personal situation. For example; how much money you have or could earn over the next couple of years. That and keep an eye on the exchange rate. If you are looking, get the prepartion going; make a few contacts over there, names of agencies and see what the job market is like. Any time is a good time if you have a job offer :-)
Answer 2 :
Only if your job is needed then yes but i dont think it is i mean i know loads of accountants so yeah.. they arent suffering the credit crunch like the UK / Us wherever you live but it is hard to move there and it is expensive in big towns but there arent many jobs in the world atm with america starting the crunch. but if you think you have a good chance then go for it, read all the immigration websites etc.
Answer 3 :
Migrating rules apply. Australia and New Zealand both have laws governing migration . Unless you have a guaranteed job you'll only get a visitors visa.

Confused over tax rebate - is it overpayment of tax or expenses claimed back?
Hi, I just received a self assessment form claiming that I have overpaid on my tax. I have to contact them to ask for the money. I am confused as I know my accountant completed my tax forms and I am expecting money for expenses I have incurred whilst self-employed. Is the letter I received this morning the money for these expenses or when it says it is for overpayment of tax does it mean this is a separate amount of money that I am owed?
United Kingdom - 1 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
As a Chartered Accountant of some 30years or so, i think that your accountant should have sent to HMRC - tax authorities when he completed your tax form a copy of your business accounts showing the taxable profit due. Obviously you have made some payments on account of the final liability and it looks like you have overpaid your tax. All your allowable business expenses should have been claimed by your accountant in calculating yourtaxable profit. Hope that this has helped you! You can always phone the Self Employed Tax Helpline at your local or Regional Tax office.

Which accountancy institute is the best?

Which accountancy institute is the best?
I want to train to become an accountant but there are so many different institutes in the UK that I am completely lost as to which set of exams to study. Can anyone help me by suggesting which institute's exams are the best.
Careers & Employment - 4 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It depends what type of accountant you want to become. Do you want to be a financial or management accountant? Do you want to go in to practice or work in business? Only when you've made those choices can you choose which institute you want to join.
Answer 2 :
I'm a member of the ICAEW - the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Its exams are certainly quite demanding. The Chartered Certified Institute also has a very good reputation. You can pass your exams with them before getting an accountancy job, which is not possible with the ICAEW
Answer 3 :
ICAEW. I used to work for ACCA, they used to fiddle their membership figures. ACCA is a hypocritical organisation which talks so much about ethics and company transparency and yet it is so dishonest. ICAEW is better known and better respected. And you CAN work abroad with an ICAEW quallification even though ACCA claims they are the only qualification that enables that (another lie).
Answer 4 :
In order to determine which institute is right for you it is first necessary to determine what level you aspire to. There are basically two different levels: Accounting technician (AAT or CAT) and Chartered Accountancy (ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, CIPFA, ICAS & ICAI). The accounting technician qualifications are lower level accounting qualifications which allow members to act as support staff in a whole range of finance functions. AAT is sponsored by CIMA, ICAEW, CIPFA & ICAS while CAT is sponsored solely by ACCA who abandoned AAT back in the mid 1990s as it wanted to introduce a technician level qualification which had the same business model which it did, ie. one with a global presence. However, in all other respects the two technician qualifications are the same. If, however, you are more ambitious then you will want to train to become a chartered accountant. This can be done after qualifying as an accounting technician or once you have completed a university degree. If you are interested in working as a management accountant in industry then the CIMA qualification is for you. If you are more interested in working in the public sector then CIPFA is the qualification to take. However, if you are hoping to eventually work in public practice then ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS or ICAI are the qualifications you should be looking at. In terms of which qualification is the most difficult to pass the answer is that there is no difference. They are all chartered accountancy bodies and independent scrutiny of all qualifications has shown that they are all equally difficult to pass. The ICAEW is the largest of these chartered accountancy bodies in terms of members. However, statistical evidence suggests that the ACCA will become the largest of these bodies in 2008. Reasons for this include the fact that this body has adapted better to the new global environment and has successfully set itself up as the international accountancy qualification. For an unbiased statistical analysis of the UK chartered accountancy bodies the following link gives very useful data: http://www.frc.org.uk/images/uploaded/documents/ACF18F5.pdf

Psychology - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The fact that you are a trainee accountant means you are smart and a go getter. I think if for now, when you talk with co-workers look them in the face but at their chin. Do this until you become better acquainted with them. Remember that they all started where you are right now and they understand how nervous you are. As soon as you feel comfortable with these new people you look each one in the eye when you speak with them. Grown ups love that. Relax as best you can give this some time and be proud of yourself.
Answer 2 :
Go on web for Jack Black (not the actor) he writes books on this sort of thing.I think he's very good. Good luck.
Answer 3 :
try doing activities you like outside your work, being good at something increases self-esteem, and meeting new people can help you socialise better, express yourself in some way you like, and you can always take a walk to the library and search for a psychology book that explains better your problem, it's what I usually do... Sometimes it's helpful because you get to know yourself better and understand why you behave like you do! Bye! Good luck!

A good job is a job you enjoy doing and that pays enough for you to continue doing it. A good job is not always a well paid job or a high status job. Most of us end up sacrificing some of our enjoyment for more money so we can buy our enjoyment outside of work. Actors, artists and musicians all have a passion for their job but may struggle to support themselves in their chosen field. All jobs have their downside. In short, it is not possible to be prescriptive about what a 'good' job is. It all depends on the person and their needs at the time.

Misplaced Trust - Dishonest Accountant?
I am in business with a number of guys. Earlier this year while going through bank records I found a number of odd tranactions. On questioning all parties it became apparent who was responcible. Eventually after a number of days waiting for an answer I got one. Unfortunetly it proved to be incorrect. I subsequently got two more answers which I proved incorrect. Since then all my mails have been ignored by this person. This leaves me with very little options. Should I go legal with this situation? Should I wait to see if the person involved cooperates? Answer 1 :
Confront him personally and I say you have a right to be suspicous. I say you should wait to see if he involved other people and then take legal action.
Answer 2 :
Hi, Does your business have an audit? If so then they should pick up on these suspect transactions. If not then consider engaging an independent accountant to go over the books for you. This will cost some money so get some quotes. This way you will be able to establish exactly what the position is before wading in with any legal action. If the accoutnant route is too expensive then simply ask your book-keeper to explain what these transactions are. If there is a problem, then also consider the systems and controls of your business, especially supervision, reporting etc to prevent something like this happening again. All the best.
Answer 3 :
First thing I would do if at all possible is to remove his access from the account. Make sure you have documentation of the transactions and his explanations if possible. You also should consult with your other partners and keep them at least informed of any actions that you are planning to take. I think you should consult a lawyer. You can probably make a civil case, even if a criminal charge would not stick.
Answer 4 :
Get another accountant to have a look at the transactions, and if there is indeed an oddity contact the ACCA, thye will be able to advise you what to do next. After reading the extras you put in, I would see a solicitor and contact the police. Looks like you've been screwed over big style.
Answer 5 :
Take all evidence to a solicitor and see what he suggests.Or get a message to this guy telling him what you know and if he doesnt respond within so many days tell him you will seek legal action. But a solicitor will be able to get any files that this person is holding and go through everything.Otherwise send the big hairy guys round and knock his block off.
Answer 6 :
I don't know the amounts involved but go to a good firm of Forensic Accountants they know exactly what they are doing and what to look for. When they have made their report decide what action you want to take. You can go to the police or take him through the small claims court for the return of any money he may have taken. You do need to be very careful don't contact him again leave it to the professionals. I do feel he should be stopped you may not be the only firm that this happened to. I wish you every success it is very hard to be betrayed by a so called professional.
Answer 7 :
Hire a CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner). A CFE is specially trained in finding financial misdeeds in a short amount of time. You'll be amazed at what they'll find!
Answer 8 :
lol thats a good question! i think you need to think about it more though before you ask other people
